چکیده

The pathophysiology of acute laminitis remains poorly understood despite substantial scientific investigation over the last 20 yr. Evidence would suggest that ischemic and inflammatory cascades are involved. Evidence from our laboratory suggests that endothelin-1 is involved in the digital microvascular alterations characteristic of acute laminitis. Although current therapies are varied and inconsistent in their effectiveness, newer, novel, and more effective treatments can only be developed as we gain a better understanding of the pathophysiology of this devastating disease. Based on information from our laboratory, further investigation into the potential therapeutic use of endothelin antagonists for the prevention and treatment of laminitis in horses is warranted. Comparison of first and second acupuncture treatments in horses with chronic laminitis

Background: Laminitis is a common but critical disease that causes severe pain and disability in horses. The etiology and pathogenesis of laminitis remain inconclusive and a multimodal therapeutic approach is generally indicated. Acupuncture has been used as a treatment option; however, the required number of treatments is still controversial due to the lack of objective scient...

NEP, ACE and Homologues: The Pathophysiology of Membrane Metalloproteases

The zinc metalloprotease, neprilysin (NEP), plays a role in the metabolism of cardiovascular, inflammatory and neuropeptides, including mitogenic peptides such as bombesin. In the cardiovascular system, NEP has a primary role in the inactivation of natriuretic peptides but also contributes to local metabolism of angiotensin, endothelins and bradykinin. Hence NEP is seen as a potential therapeut...

Recent Research into Laminitis

Laminitis is a major disease of horses because of the associated pain and debilitating nature that make it a life-threatening condition. A complete understanding of laminitis and its complex pathophysiologic processes remains elusive despite substantial efforts and recent advances by many scientists over the last few decades. For this reason, preventative and therapeutic management strategies r...
